Barcelona’s head coach, Xavi Hernández, remains positive about the club’s future, expressing pride in the young talent despite a 4-2 loss to Athletic Club in the Copa del Rey quarterfinal. The defeat comes on the heels of a 4-1 loss to Real Madrid in the Spanish Supercopa final.

In a postgame conference, Xavi commended the youngsters, including Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsí, Hector Fort, and Marc Guiu, who played in the match. He emphasized the team’s current state, stating, “We’re playing with kids. The squad is small. This is what I mean when I say we are in construction. I think this is the start of something big. Whether I am here or not, Barça has a big future.”

Acknowledging the disappointment of the loss, Xavi added, “I am disappointed not to take the chances at 2-2, but there is nothing to blame the kid for. He is a kid of 16 who is playing amazingly. He generates [the chances] himself.”

Despite the recent setbacks, Xavi sees a bright future for Barcelona, saying, “There is a really good project, not in terms of me as a coach, in terms of a really good generation coming through. Cubarsí, Fort, Lamine, Guiu, and many more players … Fermín López. I think it’s the start of something big, but we have to work hard and we have to win. It’s about winning at Barça.”

Barcelona’s focus now shifts to LaLiga, where they are eight points behind leaders Girona, and the upcoming Champions League last-16 tie against Napoli in February. Xavi emphasized the importance of competing for trophies, stating, “We have to win trophies — or at least compete for them. Tonight we have competed. We have fought hard and given everything, but against a very good team. Athletic deserved it.”

Athletic Club’s match-winner, Iñaki Williams, unexpectedly joined the game after returning from the African Cup of Nations. Williams expressed his gratitude, saying, “I didn’t imagine that in my wildest dreams. It all came off perfectly. [On Tuesday], I couldn’t even imagine being here after a really big blow with Ghana, let alone playing.”

Barcelona now turns its attention to LaLiga with upcoming matches against Villarreal and Osasuna.
