In a significant move for both the Los Angeles Chargers and the seasoned coach, Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh has been officially named the new head coach for the Chargers. The team confirmed the agreement on Wednesday, even updating their profile picture on X (formerly Twitter) to feature Jim Harbaugh.
“Ladies and gentlemen, we got him,” exclaimed the Chargers in a statement on X.
Jim Harbaugh, expressing his gratitude and excitement, shared his thoughts in a statement:
“My love for Michigan, playing there and coming back to coach there, leaves a lasting impact. I’ll always be a loyal Wolverine,” he said. “I’m remarkably fortunate to have been afforded the privilege of coaching at places where life’s journey has created strong personal connections for me. When I played for the Chargers, the Spanos family could not have been more gracious or more welcoming. Being back here feels like home, and it’s great to see that those things haven’t changed.”
Harbaugh acknowledged the team’s commitment to success and outlined his priorities, stating, “My priorities are faith, family and football, and we are going to attack each with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind. This organization is putting in the work — investing capital, building infrastructure, and doing everything within its power to win.”
The announcement follows Harbaugh’s second interview with the Chargers and marks his return to the NFL as a coach, as well as to the team where he played quarterback from 1999-2000.
The Chargers had been in search of both a head coach and general manager after parting ways with Brandon Staley and Tom Telesco in December. Harbaugh’s hiring is anticipated to bring a fresh perspective to the team that finished fourth in the AFC West Conference with a 5-12 season record in 2023.
Jim Harbaugh’s coaching journey includes stints with the San Francisco 49ers from 2011 to 2014, leading the team to three NFC Championship games and one Super Bowl appearance. With a successful stint at Michigan, where he concluded the season with a 15-0 record and the National Championship, Harbaugh brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the Los Angeles Chargers.
In a social media video, Michigan football expressed their gratitude, saying, “Thank you Coach Harbaugh and Go Blue!” The Chargers, with this exciting appointment, are gearing up for a promising future under Harbaugh’s guidance.
